If Walls Could Talk

The first ring wall of Leuven, built in the 12th century.

The restoration of the ring wall in the Handbooghof was the perfect opportunity to celebrate Leuven's first stone city wall: a 2.5-kilometer-long wall with 31 towers, 11 city gates, 2 water gates, and, of course, a moat several meters deep. All of this was built almost 900 years ago to protect the people of Leuven and their count from external dangers, and can still be admired in all its glory in several locations today. This walk takes you along the route of the first ring wall, passing by surviving relics and telling the full story of this first ring wall in the context of that time.
